Peacebuilding en las Américas (PLA) is a Friends Peace Teams (FPT) Initiative that promotes peace building and trauma healing in Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. PLA offers Basic, Advanced and Facilitator Training workshops in the Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) and prepares local volunteers to lead them. Additionally, PLA developed a Trauma Healing Workshop in 2010 that built upon a community-based trauma-healing program from our FPT colleagues in Africa.
Our trainings draw on the shared experiences of participants using integrative exercises, discussions, games and role-plays to examine the ways we respond to situations where injustice, prejudice, frustration and anger can lead to aggressive behavior and violence.
With over ten programs across the four countries, our work provides grassroots solidarity, tools and hope to those most discriminated against in countries where the violent legacies of civil war perpetuate social inequality and injustice.
Since PLA began initial workshops in 2002, facilitators have completed over 900 workshops in communities, hospitals, NGOs, churches and prisons, impacting over 4,000 participants. Workshops continue to serve at-risk youth, police officers, church and NGO leaders, former guerrilla and paramilitary, teachers, Garifuna (afro-indigenous) communities, prisoners, survivors of war and sexual violence, displaced communities, indigenous communities in defense of their territories, people with disabilities, juvenile delinquents, and many more.
